Many associate places like Los Angeles, Miami or Las Vegas with the electronic music scene, but What’s Next Ohio is helping to change that perception.

On January 14, a number of local electronic groups and performers hit the Newport Music Hall for a local event that garnered some national exposure. Newport is certainly a legendary venue for Columbus, and letting up and coming artists from the local scene is rare. Many of the showcased electronic artists hail from the area, beginning their trade in dorm rooms, apartments and their parent's garages.

With the music hall being right in the heart of the Ohio State campus, the event drew plenty of attention from OSU students. Electronic and dance-centered music has certainly risen in popularity, thanks to the attention it receives on college campuses throughout the country, which made the location of Saturday’s event all the more important.

The Columbus area is said to be quite renowned for having a great underground electronic music scene, but up until now, that scene has stayed largely hidden. With events like What’s Next Ohio, college students got to hear some great local artists and learn more about the people who have been putting music into the local electronic scene for quite some time.

By: Melinda Carter

Melinda Carter is a creative writer from the University of Texas El Paso.
Chris has passed the Advanced level of the Court of Master Sommeliers certification program, is one of only two Master Sommeliers candidates in Columbus and is arguably one of the most sought-after beverage directors around.

For the past year, Dillman has been running the wine department at Upper Arlington’s new Giant Eagle Market District. After a career in restaurants, it’s a change he’s adapting to.

I was curious to learn what Chris recommended this winter – at a price point we all can afford. Yet here in Columbus a local meadery is brewing up some pretty incredible blends that would make for quite the honeymoon, Babylonian or otherwise.

As part of my gig with Edible Columbus magazine, I recently got to check out Brothers Drake Fine Mead, located in the Short North.

You can read the complete story here, but I thought I'd "pour a taste" for my a la mode LOVERS...

Originally started by brothers Eric and Woody Drake, is located in Weinland Park just outside the Short North. As the sole developer of mead in the Central Ohio area, Co-owner and Head Mead Maker Woody Drake is always looking to educate people about the unique flavor you find in mead.

Now, with a new location and a new tasting room, the folks behind Brothers Drake have the opportunity to introduce locals to a drink they probably haven’t heard of.

“Basically, people don’t consider mead because they don’t know what it is,” said Woody. “We are on a mission to change that.”

It is a process he’s gotten down to a science. Since discovering his passion for mead over 16 years ago, Woody has turned his hobby into an award-winning business. Developed through a two-step fermentation process, Brothers Drake Mead can take anywhere from six months to a year and a half to complete.

Woody says that it’s all about finding the best ingredients and the right equation—what started as learning by trial and error turned into quite the science. His recipes have altered over time and, as with wine, the final product will vary based on the ingredients.

“Our goal is to be as local as possible,” said Oron Benary, co-owner and general manager at Brothers Drake. “We recently started exclusively sourcing our honey from Marysville; we’re also getting our lavender and fruit locally. Basically, we have made it a serious priority to source our ingredients closer to where we’re selling our product.”

Join the local movement and check out Brother Drake’s tasting room, which is open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. – 10 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. – 1 a.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. – 1 a.m.

Brewed Awakening

Here’s a confession – I spend roughly $600 per year on Skinny Vanilla Lattes. Yes, you read that right. I am part of the 33 million customers that visit Starbucks Coffee each week (well, three times per week for me, since we’re being honest).

So, when asked to profile local coffee roasters for the spring edition of Edible Columbus, you can imagine how it threw off my regular Starbucks routine.

Forgot the fact that I write for a local food magazine. Forget the fact that I have a blog about local food and beverage. When it comes to local coffee, I’m clueless. I didn’t think we produced coffee in the U.S., let alone locally.

Forced out of my comfort zone, I succumbed to enlightenment – to purging my life of Skinny Vanilla Lattes and coffee ignorance. You can read all about it on page 60 of Edible Columbus Online. And in the meanwhile, be sure check out these three local coffee shops that will have you skipping Starbucks once and for all.

Stauf’s Coffee Roasters, 1277 Grandview Avenue, Grandview

Café Brioso, 14 East Gay Street, Downtown Columbus

Backroom Coffee Roasters, 1442 West Lane Avenue, Upper Arlington

Sweet Clove - Sweet Goodness

Brunch – it sounded so good when you made plans Friday night.

But come Saturday morning long lines, grumpy waiters and mediocre pancakes has you opting for Cheerios in bed rather than breakfast with friends.

Well, not for long. Set your alarm clocks people because Sweet Clove Sunshine Café just opened on Sawmill Road and it’s not going to have short lines for long.

Cord Rogers, corporate chef at The HoneyBaked Ham Company, recently launched the company’s first full-service breakfast and lunch restaurant. Sweet Clove, named after the honey used in the HoneyBaked traditional spice mixture, was piloted here in Columbus and has been so successful that six new locations are already in development across the country.

But, what caught my attention was the company’s devotion to sourcing local ingredients and the quality in menu development.

“From the cheeses we get from Ohio’s Amish Country to our meats and local eggs from right up the street, we are committed to sourcing locally when we can,” said Rogers.

In addition to the ingredients at Sweet Clove the thought and quality behind each menu item is impressive. Everything is baked fresh in-house – from the croissants made for sandwiches to the ginormous French Toast, which is baked in a high-velocity oven rather than cooked on a griddle (where extra fat and oil needs to be added for lubrication).

My recommendation? Try “The New Traditional” one of Sweet Clove’s many benedicts, offered with bacon rather than ham and served over a Pancake Muffin – Cord’s take on the English Muffin. The bacon in The New Tradition is rubbed overnight with cane sugar, spices and honey… and it is money.

The hollandaise, made from scratch every day, is the perfect compliment to the hint of sweetness from the Pancake Muffin and the creaminess of the eggs. No joke, you will feel like you’re a kid again, eating breakfast down on grandma’s farm. No worries if, like me, you’re grandma is from the city and you’ve never stepped foot on an egg farm.

Sweet Clove offers breakfast and lunch seven days a week and I promise you will find top-quality food coupled with the best customer service in town. Don’t just take my word for it either – Sweet Clove is averaging a 4.87 rating out of 5 on their comment cards. I couldn’t help but take a peek in the box on my way out the door. The one card I read simply stated, “Absolutely Amazing.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Sweet Spot – Emlolly Candy

In 7th grade Lauren Cattell received more Candy Grams than I did during the Perry Middle School Valentines Day party.

I think that's where my infatuation with receiving sugary treats on Valentines Day began. Combine that with my sweet tooth and it should come as no surprise that the quickest way to my heart is through chocolates, desserts and candy of all kinds!

Someone must have tipped Emily McCurdy and Melanie Bunstine off because I recently received a package of the most delicious chocolaty treats from the mother-daughter team that owns Emlolly Candy.

So, just in time for Valentines Day, I had to pop in their store and see what Emlolly was all about.

Located in historic downtown Worthington, right next door to The Old Bag of Nails Pub, Emlolly Candy is a delightful little shop carrying all of your favorite sweets.

The ladies of Emlolly made a name for themselves with their signature Block O Buckeyes – handmade, officially licensed “buckeyes” shaped like The Ohio State University’s iconic Block O. The adorable chocolates are an infusion of a creamy peanut butter center covered in Emlolly's signature sweet, rich chocolate.

I can’t help but think they’d make the perfect valentine for any OSU lovah.

Keep Emlolly in mind for "candy bars" at weddings and events, kids birthday parties, Ohio State tailgates or anytime you need a quick sugar fix. They have everything from an M&M buffet to vintage candy by the decade.

For Monday, I’m thinking Emlolly Chocolate Dipped Strawberries + a bottle of Sketchbook Cab = perfection. Oh, and my hubby as well, of course!

In Good Spirits

For my latest gig with Edible Columbus Magazine I got to sit down with the guys behind Middle West Spirits, Columbus’ new micro-distillery. Middle West made a huge splash back in April when they launched OYO Vodka.

Owners Brady Konya and Ryan Lang couldn’t be more driven, down-to-earth and excited about their Short North based operation. Not to mention they love vodka and Columbus almost as much as I do (which made us instant friends).

I wanted to give Columbus a la Mode readers a little taste – or should I say “a shot.” For the complete article, pick up a copy of the magazine or visit Edible Columbus Online.

"In winter, Ohio kind of looks like Russia.

Which is one of many local inspirations Brady Konya and Ryan Lang took into consideration when launching Middle West Spirits right here in Columbus. Contrary to Russia, Konya and Lang joke that Ohio isn’t known for vodka … yet.

The Columbus-based micro-distillery is one of two grain-to-glass vodka and gin distilleries in the state, and one of few in the Midwest. Grain-to-glass means Middle West makes everything from scratch, working with the farms that grow their ingredients. In short, Konya and Lang mash, ferment, distill and infuse—all in house.

Besides the weather, the two entrepreneurs draw inspiration from local resources as well, sourcing the majority of ingredients from Ohio farms. All of their wheat comes from Northern Ohio, is milled locally, and they’re developing a supply chain of local farmers to do seasonal products that highlight Ohio agriculture, berries, fruits and spices."

Foodies Unite - Taste of Grandview Event

If you follow Columbus a la Mode regularly then you already know that two of my favorite things to talk about are Grandview… and Grandview restaurants. So, you can imagine my delight when I was recently invited to preview the fares being offered at this weekend’s Taste of Grandview.

Last week I joined other Columbus food writers (Bethia Woolf, Laura Herron, Lisa Dillman and Christina Christian) in a restaurant crawl where we sampled Grandview’s finest. By hour three our bellies were stuffed and our iphones were filled with photos, fun facts and tips for navigating this foodie heaven taking place Sunday, October 3.

A variety of vendors will be participating, but the following restaurants were kind enough to open their doors and invite us in to sample their “Taste” concoctions.

Grandview Café
Third & Hollywood
Noodles and Co.
Hoggy’s
Minuteman Pizza
Trattoria Roma
Mazah
Jeni’s Ice Cream
Stauf’s Coffee Roasters

If you want the A La Mode reco, my personal favorites go out to:

Third & Hollywood’s cheddar herb biscuits with prosciutto, pimento cheese spread and frisee lettuce. They served it up with a Meiomi Pinot, which was the perfect compliment to those warm, salty biscuits.

I also L-O-V-E-D Mazah’s Baklava Sundae. The texture in this dish is to die for and even after their amazing sampling platter; I promise you’ll want to save room for dessert.

All the details for the event can be found on the Taste of Grandview Facebook Page. On a somewhat related note, I’m now on a diet.

MOUTON - A Blast From The Past

Anyone who knows me will tell you - I love all things vintage! From vintage furniture to art... decorating to wine and, HELLO, dresses!!!

So as you may imagine, I wasn't overly surprised when I recently discovered, that I too, love vintage cocktails!

I'd been hearing a lot about MOUTON and its unique concept (bread, wine, meat, cheese, cocktails) but I had yet to give it a try. So, wondering about Gallery Hop last week seemed like the perfect time to pop in for a drink.

The space (located where the old Ohio Art League occupied) is unique and "dripping in style." Sitting at the marble bar, complete with retro lighting and distressed, shabby chic furniture, you can't help but feel a little hip. The menu is literally pasted on the wall and features artisan foods, European wines and, of course, vintage cocktails. I was delighted to find all the classics my grandparents serve up - drinks like the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Rob Roy and Gin Fizz.

By recommendation I ordered the Moscow Mule, a creative combo of lime, ginger beer and OYO vodka (from Central Ohio's first and only true "grain-to-bottle" micro-distillery). The cocktail was refreshing, tasty... and had a kick, which you know I love on a Saturday night!

Our bartender was phenomenal and I even got a chance to meet owner Yusef Riazi. He's enthusiastic about the progress of the restaurant and absolutely delightful to chat with.

MOUTON is a great spot to hit up before dinner in the Short North or Italian Village. Grab the cheese board and a cocktail and prepare to feel... well... vintage.

Hip Hop: Spagio Cellars and The Grandview Hop

I've been meaning to check out The Grandview Hop since we moved into the neighborhood over a year ago. So, while heading out for a casual dinner, I was delightfully surprised when we happened upon it.

What began as an accident, turned into one of the most charming dates...

Do you remember the block party scene from the movie The Sandlot? Let me set the stage: Kiddos running around with ketchup down their shirts and balloons tied to their wrists, live music in the street, parents sipping cold beers and catching up with neighbors. You can almost smell the mix of BBQ and kettle corn, hear the fireworks going off in the distance. What ever happened to block parties?

Anyway, that scene from The Sandlot is unbelievably similar to the scene you'll find at The Grandview Hop (taking place the last Saturday night of every month April - November).

The Hop is a celebration of Grandview's best. It's a unique mix of food, drinks, shopping, live music and art that runs along Grandview Avenue between 1st and 5th.

My recommendation...

Walk the Avenue around 8 p.m. Grab a Bud Light and wonder though the booths, check out the band and be cautious of the little ones, dodging through the crowd with Jeni's Ice Cream and cotton candy. Then, pop in Spagio Cellars for a late dinner.

Spagio Cellars (attached to Spagio Restaurant) is a quaint little store where you can purchase thousands of premium wines. They also have a large assortment of craft beers, cigars, fine cheeses and a precious little menu of appetizers, salads and wood fired pizzas. You can grab a bottle off the wall and for a small corking fee, sit and enjoy. The Brie Pizza with sweet apple butter, French brie cheese, pears and candied walnuts is to die for.

The Grandview Hop is perfect for a night out with the fam... the beau... or anyone that might enjoy a good old fashioned street fair. Best part - you don't have to live in the hood to enjoy this block party.

Shameless Plug: à la mode in Edible Columbus

I’m never one to hate on a little self-love.

And for that reason, I want to share with you a column I’m writing for Edible Columbus Magazine. It’s called “Behind the Bottle” and is the place to read about how Columbus gets their drink on.

For our summer issue I went on a mission to find the best summer inspired and market fresh cocktail in town. I ended up discovering five AMAZING drinks that are certain to cool you down during this crazy Columbus heat wave.

While I visited some old à la mode friends (i.e., Bar Eleven and Deepwood Restaurant) I also discovered some awesome new joints like Sage American Bistro and Nida's Thai on High. I L-O-V-E getting recommendations! However, my friends always joke that my canned response is:

“Everyone already knows about _______.”

However, I’m reconsidering. If you are new to Columbus, you actually may NOT know about some of the most popular hot spots in this great city. So here are just a few...

Places to eat, drink and be merry (that you may... or may not already know about):

Jeni’s Ice Cream
I mean duhhhhhhhhh. If you haven’t been to Jeni’s, you may be living under a rock. It’s the most creative and delicious place to grab a cone in the city. They dole out flavors like Mackenzie Creamery Goat Cheese with Cognac Figs and Wildberry Lavender. Best of all it’s a farm-to-cone creamery that utilizes LOCAL, fresh ingredients. My personal fave is a combination of Salty Caramel and Bourbon Buttered Pecan… I mean…YUM.

Short North Gallary Hop
On the first Saturday of each month, street performers, musicians and artists hit the sidewalks of the Short North, Columbus’s designated arts district. Shops set up temporary exhibits and art galleries remain open late. You walk, you drink, you bask in one of the greatest neighborhoods in C-bus. PLUS you get to feel artsy and cool while being just a few blocks away from plenty of bars to hit-up after the hop.

Northstar Café’s Veggie Burger
I eat this like once a week. Seriously. Northstar has three locations in Clintonville, the Short North and coming soon Easton. I love that they use organic, locally sourced and artisan produced foods. And don’t be a hater on the veggie burger. My friends will tell you - I love red meat - probably more than any lady should. However, this is unlike any other veggie burger you’ve tried. Go. Go now. I promise you won’t be craving cow when you're finished.

North Market
The North Market is actually Columbus’ only public market. There you’ll find independent merchants and farmers along with a great place to eat, mingle and people-watch. In my opinion, the BEST way to do North Market is on a Saturday morning. Grab your significant other and beg them to take you to breakfast at Taste of Belgium. A.K.A. best waffle ever. Then mosey around the market… pick up something for dinner, grab fresh flowers from Market Blooms and take in the scene. It may just become a Saturday tradition.

Like I said…this list is just a start. I would love to hear what you think. What would you add to the list?

G. Maybe it’s the fact that you don’t feel pressure to go out and get something done. You can’t do yard work or go for a run. You have a good excuse to see a movie or mole up on the couch. Basically you can bum around with your husband or your bestie and actually do what the weekend is meant for… relaxation.

With all the rain lately, I’ve been embracing this ideal full force. Just a couple of weeks ago we spent Sunday wondering through German Village. We popped in and out of stores, hung out at the Book Loft and grabbed dinner at Max & Erma’s. Afterwards we decided to find somewhere to get a drink and dessert.

That’s how I discovered G. Michael’s.

Though I’ve driven past it a hundred times, I’ve never stopped in and checked the restaurant out. What a perfect place for a rainy day date. We sat at the bar and ordered a deep glass of red and the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar – which was, quite possibly, the best dessert I’ve ever had. A rich oatmeal chocolate chip cookie is served HOT with fresh whip cream and a scoop of Jeni’s Salty Carmel Ice Cream. Um, yeah.

The atmosphere is cozy – with exposed brick, big booths and amazing art and photography. And, our service was impeccable.

Long story short, we can’t wait to come back for dinner, to check out their patio… or even spend another rainy Sunday at the bar.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://columbusalamode.blogspot.com/2010/05/g-michaels-bistro-come-rain-or-shine.html' title='G. From granite countertops to multiple bathrooms, we all have our own unique “deal breakers.” Fortunately (or unfortunately) for my husband, I ONLY had one thing on the brain when we were shopping for a home:

Character.

Why? Because I LOVE OLD HOUSES! I love original hardwood, neighborhoods with personality and DIY projects that make a room go from primitive to shabby chic!

For the same reason SoBo Style in Clintonville is my go to hot spot for home décor. Specializing in both old and new home furnishing and gift items, the Web site describes the store as, “Shabby meets retro.”

I’ve visited SoBo for everything from baby gifts to a new bedroom vanity. The merchandise is fresh and always changing, and the store is just... charming. Visit SoBo on Facebook to see pictures of their current goodies.

I guarantee you’ll be convinced to stop in soon!

Get The Dish - Edible Columbus Magazine

I’ll be the first to admit, there are a LOT of Columbus magazines out there.

Capital Style, 614, CMH, C Magazine… while I personally love the variety of Columbus reads, it’s easy to get confused. However, there’s a new mag in town… and this one sets itself apart.

Edible Columbus just launched on April 1 and is THE place to get the dish on how Columbus eats. The quarterly publication “focuses on local, sustainable food sources and the people who work the land to bring this bounty to our tables.”

Each issue features fun little sections like Edible Events, Young Palates and (my favorite) Behind the Bottle; plus local restaurant features and recipes from all over Columbus. Visit their Web site to find out where you can pick up a copy.

Best of all, you don’t have to be a foodie to fall in love with this pub!

Brunch With Betty – Betty’s Fine Food & Spirits

There’s nothing better than sleeping in on a sunny Saturday morning, only to stumble out of bed and head directly to brunch.

My latest suggestion – stumble into Betty’s in the Short North Arts District. The hubby and I are always looking for new breakfast places. And, while First Watch is fine for a quick BLTE*, let’s face it, it’s not really brunch if mimosas aren’t involved.

Recently we’ve been avoiding the line, snagging a seat at the bar and ordering up two Bloody’s (though the Pomegranate Mimosas are a must try). I love the Breakfast Club, a delicious combo of grilled egg, bacon, sprouts, romas and pesto mayo, served on a warm croissant… YUM! And, my man loves that he can order off the lunch menu too.

Betty’s prides itself in being “a cozy neighborhood hot spot serving up heaping helpings of Ohio comfort food with extra sides of sass.” Take in the eclectic crowd and collection of pin-up art (plenty of Bettie Page to go around) this weekend! You have my word; it will be anything but ordinary.

*BLTE (bē'ěl-tē'-ee) n. A bacon, lettuce, tomato and egg sandwich; found on the First Watch brunch menu, VERY LEGIT.

Restaurant Week Columbus

Call me insane, but I don’t think it’s crazy that Restaurant Week kicks off on my birthday! The paper put together a list of the Top 20 Restaurants in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Columbus and, intrigued, I wanted to see if there were any I hadn’t tried. That’s when I was introduced to DeepWood.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

I learned when I called for resos that the restaurant provides the opportunity for two styles of dining experiences: The Tavern and Dining Room. My husband and I went early to grab a drink and check out the two different menus. We ended up sitting in the Tavern and ordering off the Dining Room menu, which I highly recommend. The restaurant feels like an old lodge, coupled with a trendy bar and great location (next to Martini, just south of the Cap).

I very rarely say this, but no lie, everything we ordered was awesome. Our table started off with the Scallop Wellington, a unique blend of scallops wrapped in spinach and puff pastry served with wild mushrooms. One word, mouthwatering.

The restaurant has a beverage program that pairs drinks with the cuisine of both menus. Wanting to share a bottle (okay, two) we ordered a yummy little pinot called Joelle (Russian River Valley, California, 2007). It complimented every entrée on the table, including the filet, duck and, yes, rabbit. Now I hate when I don’t order the best thing on the menu, and while the duck literally melted in my mouth, I think the rabbit was even better. Props to my father for an excellent order.

We ended the meal with two desserts. First, a caramelized banana, wrapped in phyllo dough and served with bourbon ice cream. One wasn't enough, so we paired it with a perfectly executed soufflé, dished up with biscotti and hot chocolate so thick you could eat it with a spoon. If that doesn’t bring you in to DeepWood, I don’t know what will.

In the end, I must admit, my personal Top 20 would differ from that of the Dispatch. While I think they should have consulted someone prior to its naming, I had quite a pleasant experience my first time around…

A girlfriend of mine is working for the restaurant, which in my opinion, is the most ideal way to try all the best things on the menu. She started us off with the biscuits (warm, buttery and fantastic) and a HUGE serving of delicious, salty mussels. I gave both of these a big thumbs up and was excited to move on to the veggie burger. While I must admit, it wasn’t as good as Northstar (both restaurants have the same owner) I would still recommend… if you don’t mind getting a little messy.

Third and Hollywood is definitely worth a try. I say it is the perfect spot for a cold winter night. So when I heard Jeff Mathes was opening a “hot new tapas bar” around the corner, I was excited to check it out.

On my first visit to Barrio, the intent was to swing by for a quick drink with a girlfriend. One drink turned into appetizers, which turned into dinner, which ended 3 hours later with a tawny port and a flour-less chocolate cake. YUM. I think it was a combination of rainy weather, good conversation and a great selection of small plates that kept us going.

My second visit was equally good, when a couple of coworkers and I took advantage of a beautiful Friday afternoon and walked down for lunch. The floor to ceiling windows all pull open, giving the entire restaurant the feeling of dining al fresco. I definitely recommend lunching at the bar; you’ll feel like you’re on vacation.

Long story short, Barrio is a great new place… rain or shine.

Their specialty is the Ceviche, a unique combination of either tuna, scallops or shrimp, served with plantain chips, popcorn and chayote squash. If you’re into spicy foods, it’s definitely worth a shot. The Bacon Wrapped Dates are amazing, and I wouldn’t skip on that chocolate cake either, served with a raspberry mole sauce!

How appropriate to feature some outstanding Latin American cuisine – on Cinco de Mayo of course!

La Chatelaine Wine Tasting- Perfect Girl's Night Out

La Chatelaine Bistro in Dublin (an á la mode favorite) is hosting a wine tasting event next week. Which is why everyone needs to pay a visit to Mukha custom cosmetics and medi spa. Tucked away in the Short North Arts District, Mukha is definitely an experience. While they offer a variety of services, they’ve quickly become known for their make-up application and custom blended cosmetic products – giving Mukha its name, which means, “face” in Tagalog, a Philippine language.

Within ten minutes of meeting Tim Maurer, co-owner and make-up artist to the stars, you will want to be his new best friend. Not only did he personally develop the color and skin-care lines, he actually teaches you what looks best and coaches you through the application process. Not to mention, he REALLY knows how to make a girl look (and feel) great.

My advice: next Friday afternoon hit up Mukha for a make-up application. The foundation is airbrushed on and gives you a fresh looking sheen that lasts all night. Treat yourself to a custom blended lip-gloss, it’s made right in front of you and comes in yummy flavors like mimosa and crème brule. Don’t skip on the fake lashes; Mukha’s make-up artists know how to balance fabulous and authentic (not the easiest task)!

Finally, ask for a glass of bubbly...sit back, relax and feel beautiful. I promise, you’ll look it too.

Priority Mail- New Columbus Magazine

A new Columbus magazine is hitting the stands and from what I see, it’s distinctly different than the other C-bus pubs we know and love. A monthly, lifestyle magazine, CMH will feature stories from local contributors and Columbus trendsetters that change monthly to keep the content new and fresh.

CMH just launched their Web site, which is worth a look. I just love how it describes the mag, “Unique perspectives and insights on the people, places and things that interest urban insiders, sophisticated suburbanites and savvy hipsters in Columbus.” Sound familiar? Check it out!

First Date Roundup

Waiting for his call… choosing the right outfit… and that nervous little feeling you get in your stomach. Ah, the first date.

Listen up gents- dating well is an art form. The choice of location, the mood, the conversation; while it’s a bit overwhelming, there are some things you CAN control. It’s there, my friend, where I come in…

Let’s call this a first date roundup. Three great choices, that won’t let you down: the mid-week meet up, Saturday night apps or my personal favorite – coffee and dessert. The thing to keep in mind is to be time sensitive. It’s a first date, a meeting, an “interview” if you will.

So relax a little, be yourself and leave the venue to me.

The Mid-Week Meet Up
It’s tried, it’s true, it’s drinks after work. One of the most common first dates, meeting for an early evening cocktail is perfect, because it feels low-key and you don’t have to deal with the potentially awkward pick up.

Newly remodeled, Martini is located in “the original short north” at High and Vine and is the perfect spot for that initial date drink. The new lounge is modern, with a racy white bar and special lighting. The atmosphere is lively – but not so loud that you can’t hold a conversation.

Added bonus… EVERYONE’S better after one martini.

Saturday Night Apps
Rigsby’s Kitchen is just about ideal for grabbing a drink and splitting an appetizer. The menu has a great selection of antipasti. Personal recommendation: the Steamed Mussels (and a bottle of the Chianti Classico). The bar is separate from the dining room, so you won’t feel on display.

Saturday night apps is a great date option when one or both of you have already made plans. Meet early in the evening and, hey, if it goes well… invite the new flame to join you later on.

Coffee and Dessert
I must admit, there’s no quicker way to my heart! Basi Italia is on Highland Street (between Hubbard and Buttles) in Victorian Village. This adorable little place is actually in an old house and, in my opinion, one of Columbus’s best-kept secrets.

Nearly impossible to get into, make reservations for late and go in for espresso and dessert. The cannoli are to DIE for! Cross your fingers and you just may get seated on the romantic little terrace out back.

Caffeine, chocolate and wood burning stove? I can pretty much guarantee that’ll heat things up.

Attention Columbus Yogis

I searched…and I searched…and I FINALLY found a Columbus yoga studio that I love!

V Power Yoga is located in the warehouse district of downtown Columbus. Newbies beware - because it’s power yoga, it’s more vigorous and athletic. “Sun salutations (vinyasas), standing lunges and balancing poses are combined to move toxins out of the body.” Layman's terms: you really get your sweat on.

Julie is the instructor and she’s awesome. Totally down to earth and motivating. At V Power Yoga you’re going to find a non-judgy environment combined with people that really want a work out.

Check out a beginner class (every Wednesday 6 p.m. or Saturday at 11 a.m.) and get that body back in gear.

That’s A-One Spicy Meatball!

I like just about every Cameron Mitchell restaurant. Cameron’s in Worthington is by far the most superior, but I may be partial, being that I practically grew up there.

That being said, Mr. Mitchell really outdid himself with this one.

Let me be clear that this post is not about Marcella’s. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic little place, one worthy of a reco. But everyone already knows about Marcella’s. No this post is about something greater than Marcella’s itself…it is about the meatball. Yes, Marcella’s meatball.

Here’s the story. Just last year I was living in Chicago and flying to Columbus practically every other weekend (ah love…what it will make you do). See there’s this Thursday night flight out of Chi-town that leaves just after work and puts you into Columbus by 7:15 – not bad.

Anyway, we got into this little habit of leaving the airport and heading directly to Marcella’s in the Short North. I can’t remember when it was exactly, had to be early on, but one fateful night, we discovered the meatball.

Braised Veal Meatball to be exact, served in simple tomato sauce. I’m telling you, it melts in your mouth. There is something about the sweetness of the sauce and the tenderness of the veal. Oh boy. Sometimes we go and each order the meatball. Seriously though, “One bottle of wine, two meatballs.”

However, there is a perfect combination and it goes like this:

A liter of the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, it’s the house red and it is legit. Only $20 by the way. Yes, you read correctly, $20 and you would never know.

The cheese service, three will be enough and don’t skip the Teleggio.

Of course the meatball.

And finally, the Tiramisu. Because I never pass on Tiramisu.

It may not sound like enough for two, but I promise you won’t leave hungry. And here is the best part – you will spend around $60, hell of a date for only $60.

Go. Go tonight. Go get that meatball.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

My mother always told me, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Similarly, I don’t think you can judge a restaurant by its exterior. I discovered Vittoria Ristorante & Bar the other night, and while the outside looks commercial, my mom’s little principle proved true once again.

It wasn’t until friends of ours wanted to go see the lights at the Columbus Zoo that I started looking for a fun place to eat in Powell. I figured after an hour and a half of wondering around in the freezing cold, we would want red wine and a fireplace. We got both – and more.

They claim European design, combined with traditional and authentic Italian. The interior is contemporary, in an American bistro sort of way, but the place settings, lighting and murals give the ambiance an old world feel. The menu ranges from traditional Italian, to specialties of the chef, including Lamb Chops Alvito and Chicken Abruzzese.

Vittoria is the perfect place to make like the Italians and gather with friends. Eat too much bread and drink too much wine. Talk loud, laugh hard and dine...well.

Dress For Success

It's that time of year again.

And on top of travel plans, buying gifts and catching up with fam, you've got 6 holiday parties and, of course, nothing to wear! I'll tell you what, there is nothing I enjoy more than making some resos, putting on a dress and going out for a nice meal. However, when you see me at the restaurant, I'm going to have a martini in my hand...not a camera (strike one). As far as cooking goes, ha, not my forte.

So despite the fact that I’m not a foodie, I rather do enjoy eating. And last night, I ate well.

Giuseppe’s was recommended to me by a coworker and I went for a late dinner. I neglected to call and reserve a table, and much to my surprise they were running a bit of a wait (a wait on Wednesday after 9 p.m., probably a good sign). That being said, I never once looked at my watch while I was enjoying drinks in the lounge area. Why, you ask? Because Giuseppe’s bar rocks. A sexy little atmosphere, lively conversation and a pretty incredible wine list made the half-hour quite enjoyable.

Of course, that was just beginning. One bottle of red, bruschetta and two entrees later, I was a happy girl. I got the Gamberi Divola, which consisted of spaghetti with sautéed shrimp in a spicy sauce of tomatoes, garlic, capers and kalamata olives. Between you and me, I was not one bit ashamed when I handed back my plate, COMPLETELY clean.

Giuseppe’s offers a truly authentic Italian menu. And on the risk of sounding like a foodie - one thing I know is authentic Italian. After all, I did study food and wine…in Italy.

NightCAP?

Lately I've been feeling a little too old for Gateway and a little too over the Arena District. So you can imagine my excitement when, just a few weeks, ago I discovered the new bar Eleven adjacent to Hyde Park on the high street cap.

After a great bottle of wine and a late dinner at Marcella's, the boy and I walked over (just one block north) to meet some friends. I was delighted to finally discover a Columbus bar that wasn't blasting bad music and swarming with college kids.

Our group was situated on the heated outdoor patio, but I also took a lap inside to check out the accommodations. The lounge includes (gasp) soft seating, a fireplace and an inventive indoor/outdoor bar. I was pleasantly surprised to find an atmosphere that didn't include high-top tables and a crowded dance floor.

Eleven will quickly become known its for small plates, inventive drinks and classy ambiance. I say, try out this little equation:

One "deconstructed martini"
+ a couple good friends
- another Friday night on Park Street

= Eleven

Good-Willed Shopping

This past Sunday afternoon, Mom and I were at Saks (on what seemed like an endless quest to find a new scent) when we literally stumbled upon the "Magical Night of Giving" at Polaris Fashion Place. While I'm disappointed that I couldn’t promote this before it actually happened, I have to give props to the people at Polaris for pulling off a kick-ass event.

For one night only, tickets were sold for a donation of $5 or more. Shoppers that made a donation received 15 percent off purchases, at just about every store in the mall. Yes, even Saks! I love the Buckeyes and I love the university. That being said, there isn't exactly a plethora of cool spots to hang out after you've graduated college...or so I thought.

Just recently I stumbled across a little place called Alana's. The restaurant is located 3 blocks north of The Ohio State University (Lane Avenue) on High Street. Alana, the chef and proprietor, describes her food as "bastardized French." With a menu changing weekly and sometimes daily, they are known for their food and wine pairing and have some of the most innovative dishes I've come across in Columbus.

Last Friday night Alana's opened a new bar and the beau and I stopped in late for a drink. I ordered a Cucumber Martini, complete with fresh cucumber juice and a salt and pepper rim job. Very unique and VERY tasty. The atmosphere is colorful with exhibits from local artists. There isn't a big display behind the bar, just bottles of wine and liquor on tables and some crates. Simple. Quaint. Comfortable.

I'm seeing a romantic evening out. Try getting a table on the patio, which has been nominated in City's Best outdoor dining for several years now. To start - order the cheese service and some vino off the award winning wine list (Wine Spectator). Take a look at the daily offerings and split an appetizer and a couple different seasonal dishes.

As for the romance...after that, it's all up to you.

"Sweet" Spot

Mmmmmm Cheesecake.

And, for once, I'm not talking about the dessert!

Cheesecake botique is an adorable little shoppe filled with my other favorite kind of goodies - clothing, shoes and handbags. Located on Grandview Avenue or North High Street in Dublin, this is such a fun store for women of ALL ages. That's no coincidence, as co-owners Betsy Johnston and daughter Ashley Seminari believe that mothers and daughters alike can bond over one "true love of fashion."

The store is small, which I love (due to the fact that when excited, I have a tendency to get overwhelmed)! And the customer service is absolutely fab. Associates will call you at home when they get special sizes, new shipments or just to let you know something you liked went on sale. Be warned- there are no mirrors in dressing rooms. Cheesecake was designed that way, to encourage shoppers to come out and get help with sizes or suggestions for accessories.

Definitely stop in. Besides avoiding the 12:00 rush, you may also be surprised that upscale restaraunts and steakhouses have reasonably priced lunch menus.

Just last week I hit up Mitchell's downtown and was quite impressed with their daytime offerings. I got the Wagyu Steak Burger which was absolutely fantastic. Enjoy guilt-free by substituting your french fries with a side of their famous Chop Chop Salad. They actually have three charming locations in Columbus - Upper Arlington, Dublin and Worthington. All are great for breakfast, perfect for a light lunch and (in my opinion) ideal for an afternoon bottle of wine.

Don't be confused by the set up, you order at the counter. Or if your following my lead, just find Le Bar and ask for the wine list. I recommend a chilled white, a Saturday afternoon and a table outside. Check. New dress? Check. Hot date this friday night? Check.

So you're feeling good about the potential of a new romance in your life and you're all set for the first date. But there's nothing worse then getting picked up only to find that Romeo hasn't made any plans. Avoid the awkward conversation associated with, "So, what do you want to do tonight?" by keeping this adorable little date idea in your back pocket.

Head down to Grandview Avenue in Grandview Heights. This quaint little strip is pretty happening at night, filled with a variety of cute restaurants, wine bars and local pubs...all surrounded by a quiet little neighborhood (perfect for a romantic stroll).

My recommendation? Hit up Shoku for some fresh rolled sashimi and a good bottle of wine. The menu is "Asian Contemporary" and very reasonably priced. There are a variety of tasty plates, even if you're not a sushi fan (try the Shoku salad). Ask for a table out front and take in the atmosphere of downtown Grandview.

For dessert, cross the street and pick up a scoop of Jeni's Ice Cream. It wasn't long ago that only a few North Market shoppers were in on the unique little treat that is Jeni's. Now flavors like Thai Chili and Salty Carmel (my personal fave) are becoming house names in Columbus.

Wine AND ice cream- there's no faster way to my heart.

Coffee LOVERS Anonymous

The first thing I think about in the morning is caffeine. And, the first thing I did when I moved back to Columbus is sought out to find a unique little coffee shop I could "call my own."

After all, I'm pretty anti anything that's a chain and coffee lovers know...you're not just going for the drink. I used to frequent a lovely little place in Wicker Park and while it will be missed, I'm pretty sure I just found its replacement. So skip the Starbucks, cruise past Cup a Joe and find your way to Scottie's in Worthington.

Just like the Web site, the atmosphere is low maintenance. Go in for the free Wi-Fi and stay for the free refills. It's home to a more laid back crew and, unlike most places closer to campus, Scottie's is free of loud house music or crowds of college kids.

It's the perfect way to start your Sunday morning. You can find me there, curled up on that distressed leather couch.
